The Dos and Donts of Business Email Etiquette
The Dos and Donts of Business Email EtiquetteThe Dos and Donts of Business Email Etiquette Few things can tarnish your professional brand quite like a poorly written, misguided schmelzglas. One click of the send button can be the difference between a successful business exchange and a potential HR issue or coworker conflict. And while Americans send hundreds of thousands of schmelzglass a day, it should not be taken for granted.Whether youre a senior professional or an office newbie, here are 13 must-remember dos and donts of business email etiquette.Write a clear, concise subject line that reflects the body of the email. Avoid subject lines with,Hi, Touching Base or FYI, and do not leave a subject line blank.Remember Hi and Hey communicate a lack of professionalism and maturity . Begin your email with phrases such as Good Morning, Good Afternoon, Good Evening or Hello. Good Day or Greetings are other phrases used frequently in the international arena. In direct cul tures like the U.S., the best practice is for the sender to introduce themselves by first and last personenname with some background information in the first few lines. For example, Dear Ms. Mandell My name is Sharon Schweitzer, founder of Access to Culture I was referred to you by or My name is Sharon Schweitzer and I am an International Business Expert writing to you about This is especially important when introducing yourself to new contacts, potential customers, clients and employers who want to know how you received their contact information. When sending email to people from indirect cultures, it is proper protocol and a best practice to research country customs. For example, in Japan it is polite, appropriate and customary to inquire about the weather in the first sentence of a business email. Contrastingly, it would be inappropriate to send an email introducing yourself to a potential Japanese contact. In indirect cultures, introductions are only made by mutually respected third parties due to custom cold emails are ignored, deleted, blocked and/or marked as junk.Emails can easily be misinterpreted through text without context. Humor is culture-specific. Avoid both humor and sarcasm in e-mails as the recipient may be confused, or worse, offended. When you attach a file, be kind enough to take a few extra seconds to paste it into the body of the email as well. This shows consideration to the recipient, by saving them time and risk in opening attachments. Is this more time consuming for you? Yes. Is it worth it? Yes.Avoid using Reply-to-All unless everyone needs to know. When the C-Suite (CEO/COO) or administrative assistant sends an email to 10 staff members requesting volunteers for a community service project, reply to the admin, not to all 10 members. Why make ten others delete your email? Reply-to-All is a function for ongoing deliberations on a particular subject.Replying within 24 hours is common courtesy . Leaving someone hanging for any lon ger and you are not only perceived as rude - it could cost you business in the long run. If youve unintentionally kept someone waiting longer than 24 hours or extenuating circumstances arose, politely explain the situation and express your apologies. Those little winking, smiling icons are for text messages. They are inappropriate and unprofessional in a business email. Emoticons may divert email to a spam filter or junk mailbox. And it can look immature and unprofessional.Email is public. Even though an email is deleted, online services and software programs can access messages on the hard drive. Before you click send consider what may happen if a business colleague, your competitor, an employer, the FBI, or any unintended recipient reads your email. Think of it this way How would my email look if it were posted on Facebook? Its inappropriate to email negative comments. An email in all uppercase letters connotes anger in an email. These antagonistic messages cause awkwardness long after the email has been sent and received. If you must relay bad berichterstattung via email, use objective words and state the facts. Face-to-face communication is best when relaying bad news .Check and recheck for spelling and grammatical errors. These errors make you seem unprofessional and will reduce the likelihood that the email will be taken seriously. Email software comes with many professional tools such as spell check - use them.By letting the recipient know that a response isnt needed, the email cycle doesnt continue on in perpetuity. Close with No reply necessary, Thank you again, See you at the board meeting Tuesday or Please let me know if I may be of further assistance. End your email with a closing such as Best, Best Regards, Sincerely, Thank you or another appropriate phrase.Sharon Schweitzer is an international business etiquette expert, author and the founder of Access to Culture .
Learn About Airplane Ownership Options
Learn About Airplane Ownership Options Learn About Airplane Ownership Options The cost of aircraft ownership is high, especially for the typical general aviation pilot. But there are ways to reduce the financial burden of buying an airplane, such as entering into an agreement with others to share the cost. There are different ways this type of deal can play out, including co-ownership agreements, partnerships, cooperative and fractional ownership. Here are the pros and cons of the common types of aircraft ownership situations. 01 Co-Ownership As the simplest agreement of them all, co-ownership is as straightforward as owning an airplane along with someone else. The total cost is divided among the total number of co-owners, and each person is responsible for their share of the cost, including operating and maintenance costs. In a co-ownership situation, each owner is listed as an owner on the bill of sale and aircraft registration certificate.Pros: Informal and simple. There is no need to go through a manager to use the airplane, and usually less restrictive, depending on the type of agreement.Cons: In co-ownership situations, there can be disagreements among owners with no leadership authority to make decisions. This can lead to animosity between owners. Depending on the written agreement, owners in a co-ownership situation may run into scheduling conflicts, maintenance disagreements, and financial disputes. Complications can also arise when someone wants to sell their share of the aircraft or if one owner decides not to p ay their share. Many people have entered into and survived co-ownership agreements with much success; others have failed and felt cheated. While co-ownership can save each owner a lot of money, it can also be a challenge to manage without a designated manager. Nevertheless, itâs the simplest way to go for casual pilots who would like to reduce the cost of aircraft ownership. 02 Partnership A partnership is similar to a co-ownership situation but is actually a business formed with the intention of creating a profit. Partnerships occur among flight instructors, flying clubs, and other commercial endeavors.Pros: Having multiple owners, or partners, means lower costs and increased profits for businesses.Cons: In a partnership, each person is legally liable for the actions of others, making this a riskier venture than a co-ownership. 03 Cooperative Ownership A newer type of aircraft ownership category, a cooperative ownership agreement operates more like a time-share or condo investment. A cooperative owner buys the airplane and sells shares to one or more people. The burden of ownership lies with the single owner, who manages everything about the aircraft- hangar rental, insurance, maintenance compliance â" and pays for all of it. The members pay a monthly fee to on top of an initial investment, and then just show up and fly.Pros: Cooperative members get a responsibility-free ownership experience. There are few scheduling conflicts, and they donât have to worry about insurance, maintenance or any other costs besides their monthly fee, which is more than a co-ownership but less than a fractional ownership. The aircraft is managed by one person, eliminating the disputes that can be involved with co-ownership. The hourly operating rate is typically much lower than outside of a cooperative agreement.Cons: Cooperative members pay a fee fo r the management of the aircraft, and share the aircraft with up to four people. The aircraft cooperative manager has the final say in all decisions. If a member disagrees with him, the ownerâs opinion trumps the memberâs.For an example of how a cooperative ownership works, check out Plane Pilot. 04 Fractional Ownership Fractional ownership is one of the oldest methods of sharing aircraft ownership and is used commonly in the corporate environment and involving jet aircraft. Fractional ownership is basically a partnership with multiple buyers at the corporate level. Fractional ownership situations include an aircraft manager and management plan, and often the buyers enter into agreements for 1/6 or 1/8th of the aircraft.Pros: Jet aircraft are much cheaper when divided up into four, six or eight shares. Scheduling conflicts are rare, as most buyers enter into an interchange agreement that allows the manager to substitute a different aircraft for the buyerâs own aircraft, allowing the buyer to fly almost anytime they need to. The management company provides a flight crew, fuel, maintenance, and insurance.Cons: Fractional deals can become quite costly with the management obtaining a significant amount of money out of the deal in exchange for their management efforts.More information on fractional own ership can be found at NBAA.

What to Expect on Your First Day at the Police Academy
What to Expect on Your First Day at the Police Academy What to Expect on Your First Day at the Police Academy Starting out in any new career can bring a lot of mixed feelings. This is especially true for the thousands of police recruits across the country who report for their first day at the police academy. Youre excited about learning new things, but you might be a little scared of the unknown, too. You wont be fully prepared for what the first day at the academy will bring, whether youve spent the last four years in college earning your degree in criminal justice or the last 20 years in a military career. But knowing what to expect on Day No. 1 as a police recruit can help. The Police Academy Can Be Confusing There will be yelling, and a lot of it. Youll probably be greeted by a group of instructors who mean business when you report. Theyll bark commands at lightning speed, and its easy to get confused and upset. Dont. Use your mind, think critically, and act accordingly. Find Your Military Bearing Fast You and your new academy classmates will most likely be ordered to immediately get into formation and to do it quickly. Some of your fellow recruits will probably have prior military experience and they will respond immediately and without confusion. Your best bet is to find the spot where everyone is forming up and just fall in with them. Line up so youre even with the person to your right, an arms length away. Come to the position of attention with your thumbs along the seams of your trousers, chin up, eyes forward and feet at a 45-degree angle. Dont move from this position unless and until youre told to do so. Dont look around and dont move your hands or head. And dont lock your knees. If you do, youll faint...and you wont be the first one. Plan On Being Wrong A Lot Go in with the understanding that whatever you do is probably going to be wrong. Expect to be yelled at. Take it in stride and understand it for what it is: a way for the instructors to gain control and instill discipline quickly, efficiently, and effectively. Theres no right answer if youre asked why you did whatever it was that drew the instructors attention to you, so avoid the temptation to try to explain yourself. Any answers you give should be short and to the point. Use Your Manners If you werent raised in a home that required you to say Yes, sir and No, sir, start getting used to saying it now. Officers are taught to treat everyone they encounter with the utmost respect, and that starts with addressing them as sir or maam. Dont worry if you have a hard time remembering to do this. The instructors will be happy to remind you. Be Ready to Meet the Physical Fitness Requirements If youre not in shape now, youre going to want to get there quickly- ideally before your first day at the academy. The instructors will shout and yell, but they wont ever hit you. You can expect to do plenty of pushups instead when a classmate screws up- and rest assured that someone will. When your arms get too tried to hold you in the front-leaning-rest position, turn on your back and do flutter kicks. These forms of physical exercise are a great way to instill both mental and physical discipline. They also teach you to push through pain and discomfort to accomplish a task, and this can help you survive a violent encounter when you get to the road. Take this part seriously right from the beginning. You cant graduate from the academy in some states without passing a physical fitness test. The test can include wall and fence climbing, sprinting, an obstacle course, and body drags. Policing Means Paperwork, Paperwork, and More Paperwork There will be plenty of forms to fill out as you get started, and youll receive an introduction to the curriculum as well. Youll sign statements acknowledging that youve received your textbooks and that youre aware of whats expected of you. Read everything carefully because youll be held accountable for all of it later. The academy isnt all about yelling, pushups and leg lifts. Important administrative matters must be attended to, and youll learn about these things as well. Some states will also test your writing skills before graduation because what youll ultimately be reporting at the end of the day can be critical to investigations. The academy will also teach you to write accurate reports. What Tomorrow Will Bring Eventually, well after Day No. 1, youll get to the good stuff. You might learn combat fight techniques and how to deal with various weapons youll meet up against over the course of your career. Youll become well versed in how to deal with many scenarios and youll be taught proficiency with a firearm. There will be simulated arrests and emergencies. Setting Yourself Up for Success Remember, the police academy instructors arent there to scare you away or to hurt you. Their goal is to get you ready for the tough career youve chosen. A day in the life of a police officer requires endurance, discipline, and tough skin. Your first day at the academy and every one after that is designed to set you up for success and to help you realize your full potential as a police officer.

Advantages of Going to Law School Later in Life
Advantages of Going to Law School Later in Life Advantages of Going to Law School Later in Life Maybe youve been considering lost opportunities in your youth, remembering how you always dreamed of becoming a lawyer. You finished college and life happened. Maybe you started raising a family, but one thing led to another and you never got around to continuing your education. Is it too late? Are you ever too old for law school? Many would tell you no. As the economy continues to struggle- and it will always continue to have its ups and downs- more people are going to law school later in life. A growing number of law students are in their forties and some are even older. Youre never too old to return to any school. Many older students find legal employment and older law school graduates have been recruited into all legal sectors. Starting- or going back to- school later in life presents unique advantages and disadvantages. If you think youre too old for law school, consider these advantages of going back to school for a graduate degree later in life. Flexible Educational Options Older workers tend to have other major commitments, such as full-time jobs and raising their families. This can make going to law school a real challenge. But it doesnt have to be. More options exist today for older students than ever before. Many law schools offer evening programs and part-time programs. Online learning is exploding and more and more educational institutions are offering this option. Work Experience Older students bring other talents to the table than just what theyve learned in school. Theyve often developed a diverse range of transferable skills from their earlier careers. Many law firms and organizations value this previous work experience. You dont have to write it off. Include it in your resume and mention it in your cover letters. For example, employers will often choose the candidate with 15 years experience in the engineering field over a recent law school grad with no work experience when weighing applicants for a job as an intellectual property lawyer, Life Experience Counts, Too Law schools seek variety in their incoming classes and your life experience can give you an edge in the admissions process. Life experience is often appreciated by employers as well. If you have experience that relates to the job youre seeking, be sure to highlight it in networking discussions and job interviews. Benefits of Maturity Research shows that employers view older workers as more mature, reliable, stable, honest, and committed. Older graduates are more focused and grounded. They know what they want in a career and from an employer. Maturity can be an advantage in both the law school admissions process and in a post-graduate job hunt. Older workers are less likely to struggle with waking up at the crack of dawn to commute to work, and theyre usually less inclined to challenge established dress codes by wearing short skirts, revealing clothes, or other inappropriate attire. They might also be more reliable and responsible simply because they know their families depend on them. All these factors can tip the sale in your favor when youre applying to law school and after youve earned your degree and passed the bar. Dont automatically write off going to law school without giving it some serious thought.

Military Commissioned Officer Promotions Rate and Time
Military Commissioned Officer Promotions Rate and Time Military Commissioned Officer Promotions Rate and Time Promotions among the officer corps in the military usually begin by simply putting in time in rate and meeting the standard. Its fairly unusual to not meet the requirements to move from O-1 to O-3. But a few offenses may delay your trajectory or even push you off track for that promotion. Driving under the influence, committing a felony, failing training programs, or not meeting the minimum standards of the military are among the items that can prevent you from being promoted. DOD Promotion Requirements Changes in authorizations, losses, and promotions to the next higher grade create fluctuations in both the time in service (TIS) and time in grade (TIG) for each of the military services. However, the Department of Defense requires that promotion opportunities for commissioned officers be approximately the same for all of the services, when possible, within constraints of available promotion positions. The chart below shows the point when commissioned officers (in any of the services) can expect to be promoted (assuming they are selected for promotion), based upon their time in service. Minimum time in grade for promotion is established by federal law and is also shown in the chart below. Promote to: Time in Service Minimum Time in Grade Required by Law Promotion Opportunity 0-2 18 months 18 months Fully qualified (nearly 100 percent) 0-3 4 years 2 years Fully qualified (nearly 100 percent) 0-4 10 years 3 years Best qualified (80 percent) 0-5 16 years 3 years Best qualified (70 percent) 0-6 22 years 3 years Best qualified (50 percent) Commissioned officers are recommended for promotion by their commanders and are selected by centralized (service-wide) promotion boards, which make promotion determinations based upon the officers promotion records. Explaining Above, Below, and In-The-Zone Promotions There are basically three promotion opportunities: Below-the-Zone, In-the-Zone, and Above-the-Zone. Below-the-Zone only applies for promotion to the rank of O-4 to O-6. One year before they would be eligible for In-the-Zone consideration, up to 10 percent of those recommended can be promoted Below-the-Zone. Most promotions occur In-the-Zone. Those not selected In-the-Zone will have one more chance, a year later The selection rate for Above-the-Zone is low, around 3%. The two most significant factors in officers promotion records are their fitness report(s) and level of responsibility in their current and past assignments. A negative or mediocre fitness report can result in being passed over. Lack of current or previous assignments that had significant degrees of responsibility can also result in not being selected. Officer Promotion Line Numbers Once selected for promotion by the promotion board, not all officers are promoted at the same time. Instead, officers are assigned a line number. Each month, the service releases the line numbers of officers to be promoted. This process ensures a smooth promotion flow throughout the year following the promotion board. Line numbers are determined using the following criteria: Date of Rank in their current gradeDate of Rank in their previous gradeTotal Active Federal Commissioned Service DateCommissioning Source: Service Academy, ROTC, OCSTotal Federal Commissioned Service Date (which would include Guard/Reserve time)Regular Officer over Reserve OfficerDate of birthReverse Social Security number, with the lowest number taking precedence Military Reserves vs. Regular Officers Being a Reserve Officer does not mean the officer is serving in the Reserves. Previously, graduates of the service academies were commissioned as Regular Officers, while those commissioned under ROTC or Officer Candidate School (called Officer Training School in the Air Force) were commissioned as Reserve Officers, who then competed later in their careers to be appointed as Regular Officers. Being a Regular officer means a better chance of being promoted, protects against RIFs (reduction in force) and allows an officer to serve longer. By law, Regular Officers promoted to lieutenant colonel (O-5) may serve for 28 active commissioned years, while those promoted to colonel (O-6) may stay for 30 active commissioned years unless earlier retired by other provisions of law. By policy, Reserve Officers are limited to 20 years of military service; this may be extended as needed to meet specific service requirements. Regular Officers may not be involuntarily released from active duty because of a reduction in the size of the officer force. Reserve Officers, however, serve at the discretion of the Secretary of the service and may be involuntarily released at any time if the personnel ceiling warrants. Because of Regular Officers greater tenure, they have some advantage over Reserve Officers. The military must obtain a return on training investment and, therefore, requires officers to serve a certain period of time after the training is completed. Promotions to O-7 and Above To be promoted to O-7, an officer must first complete a full tour in a Joint-Duty-Assignment- an assignment to a unit that comprises members from two or more of the services. This requirement can be waived, in some instances. The mandatory retirement age for all general officers is 62. The mandatory retirement can be deferred to age 64 in some cases. Under the law, an officer who has been promoted to O-7 but is not on the recommended list to O-8 must retire five years after promotion to O-7, or after 30 years of active duty service, whichever is later. An O-8 must retire five years after being promoted to O-8, or after 35 years of service, whichever comes first. The Secretary of the service concerned (i.e., Secretary of the Army, Secretary of the Navy, Secretary of the Air Force) or the President of the United States can defer the above mandatory retirements, up until the time that the officer reaches the age of 62.

How to Find Pain Points for a Cover Letter
How to Find Pain Points for a Cover Letter How to Find Pain Points for a Cover Letter When writing a cover letter for a job application, are you focused on letting hiring managers know you can do the job? Or are you focused on making the lives of people at another company easier? Let hiring managers know you can do more than the job by finding the pain points of the company to address in your pain provoking cover letter. Here is how to do it. 1. Do some digging on the company and hiring manager The first step is to find out what you can about the problems the company is experiencing and who is doing the hiring. Sometimes, the job description holds the clues to let you know what pain points must be addressed. Maybe you have seen this in a job description: âWe need to double our team in the next two months and are looking for a recruiter to lead the charge.â âWeâre looking for a savvy growth hacker who can help us reach two million users.â Next, you can identify the hiring manager by the posting on LinkedIn or you can identify people from your own network who are connected to the hiring manager. 2. Start stalking (not really) You don't actually want to stalk anyone, but at times it may feel like you are stalking someone for a job on LinkedIn. Once you have figured who knows who and who you are connected to, reach out to them with a well-written LinkedIn message. If they are local to you, see if they would agree to have a quick coffee. If not, see if they will agree to a call. Let them know what you are applying for, the company, and most importantly: Ask how to tailor your cover letter and application. Ask for insight on what the company is really hoping for someone to focus on in this position. So, letâs say you have no one to stalk: Search for people who held similar roles at different companies. Ask what their biggest challenges were. You will get some noticeable themes to write about when addressing hiring managers in your cover letter. 3. If all else fails in your pain point search All companies use social media, so check out customer complaints, press releases, Glassdoor, or news from staff on LinkedIn. You can get an idea of the companyâs pain points enough to address themes or issues you have read about. Find out if the company has had issues in the past with staffing, layoffs, market exposure, etc. See if the pain points apply to the very position you are applying for. When you do apply, your cover letter will show you did the research and work to prove the company is one you should be working at. And when you interview, you will be prepared to talk about the company like no other job candidate!
